RODDY

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

For a brief moment her 6 year old heart filled with joy. She instantly became ecstatic and sat up quickly removing the warm protective cover created by her blanket. Her face lit up with the most beautiful smile. But then in just a fraction of a second, Tiasha felt a crippling thump inside her just as if her heart skipped a beat. A dense sense of fear and dread spread over her heart and mind as she felt her body stifle. The darkness of the truth dawned over her slowly as she sat alone in her dimly lit room in the middle of the dark silent night.

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

Tiasha tried hard to scream, desperate to call her parents for help. Tears rolled down her eyes as she tried to make her heart comprehend the truth. All she wanted to do was jump out of the bed, open the door and let him in. She loved him with all her heart...after all he was her best friend...her dog Roddy! Since the day Tiasha was born, Roddy had been by her side, guarding her, playing with her, making her smile. But now she sat all alone in her bed...crying.

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

Tiasha knew Roddy was scratching at the door from the other side, asking to get inside, like he always did. Every night for the last 2 years, he slept beside her on the bed...keeping her warm and safe. Tonight was the first night in a long time that she slept alone...without Roddy by her side.

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

Tiasha peeped out of the window and into the dark night outside. As her eyes adjusted to the dark, she looked straight at the fresh grave in the backyard where Roddy was buried in the afternoon. The dog was hit by a truck before the crack of dawn and died instantly...his guts colored the asphalt with dark tones of crimson blood.

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

Tiasha saw that mud and dirt was scattered all over the grave site signalling someone or something disturbed the peaceful final resting place of her friend Roddy. She slowly turned around towards the door and kept staring at it.

SCRATCH...SCRATCH...SCRATCH!!

Finally she took a heavy breath and decided what she needed to do. She slowly got off her bed and tip-toed towards the door. Tiasha stood right in front of the door and took a deep breath. Her heart filled with joy. Her face lit up with the most beautiful smile. She held the door and turned the knob, opening the door slowly.

                                                                    THE END

Night 37 - Short Horror Story

Night 37  by Dipayan Chatterjee The children giggled while running across the corridor. I was on the verge of sleep when their laughter snapped me back to the land of wide awake. The bedroom door was closed but I could still see their moving shadows from the gap in the door right above the floor. My pregnant wife, who was sleeping beside me, woke up harriedly and looked at me with horror. I have seen that exact look on her face every night since the past month. "Please...I beg you...let's move out of here now. I can't live here anymore. I am losing my mind," she pleaded. The fact was she still couldn't adjust to our new house like I did. Although it pained me to see her like this, but I simply couldn't move out of this house just because it was haunted. You see we were pregnant with our first child. We were happy to finally start our family. So we bought this house with all our life's savings. But the house came with its previous deceased tenan...
